The Block party and Andrew Yang

The Block hosted a great party at a gallery in the LES this week showcasing the phenomenal artistry of Andrew Yang. Yang had taken many looks from last season from a diverse set of designers and made dolls each wearing one ensemble.
The Dolls were immaculate, and there was a very intelligent sense of play surrounding them, which is what one does with a doll after all. And the party was filled with the most beautiful boys. I'd say a large percentage liked boys, but that didn't stop them from being really well dressed and amazing to look at. I imagine I was difficult to have a conversation with, because I kept staring at the finely groomed crown and letting my sentences trail. Though my party partners in crime didn't seem to be paying attention to me either. The scenery was too good, just like a fashion party should be.
Also it should be noted that the free booze was Absynth which tastes like licorice, which I HATE and so after a while I felt queasy gross. Luckily the after party was downstairs at Home Sweet Home and there I dined on two black russians,

TwentyTen: Pigs in a Pen

Last night Katie invited Trace-face et moi to see one of her absolutely favorite bands: The Punch Brothers. I now understand why this bluegrass band is on the top of her list. The jams were just incredible. Chris Thile, the fastest mandolin player this side of New York and former Nickel Creek band member, is the front man. He doesn't just play the mandolin, he gets down with his bad self, dancing like a fool to the jams. The other players are no less accomplished, and all are adorable.
Since there were more people than chairs, Katie, Tracy and I shared two chairs between us and I sat in the middle with kinda half a thigh on each chair. It was like floating... But this afforded the luxury of being up close and personal with the band.
All in all the show was the perfect way to spend a Thursday night. I mean how can you not love a band that eludes to whiskey dick in their song Rye Whiskey? Keep your eyes out for their next show, not to be missed!

Fashion Weekend

Lets just jump right in!
Friday night I went to the Tribecca Grand to meet up with Katie, Babs, and Lisa. While Barbara and Lisa were being dropped off somewhere that was not the T-Grand by their cabbie, me and Katie were waiting- in the rain- for the magical list to appear.
Frustrated, I hate waiting in line, (not because I think I'm too cool for school and everyone should bow down to the fashion diva that I am, but because its obnoxious, esp when its raining. While I only got into Beatrice once before it was shut down (see I'm not that cool), I was in love with their door policy- just like Hedi says, you're either in our you're out. No waiting around to see if you're cool enough/love participating in new york night life endurance art) and getting rained on, I just decided that me and Katie would let ourselves into the hotel via the next door over, which is what we did.
The velvet rope girl/intern asked us for evidence of a stamp on hands. Which we didn't have, but we just walked around her and into the Dossier party anyways. Basically we did what we always do and let ourselves into a party.
Before we walked in we went to the bathroom just to make sure the rain had properly destroyed my hair. Really there was no hope for me left, but Katie still looked cute. As did Leigh Lezark, because she was there, being a normal girl, putting on makeup and chatting away with her pal.
Barbara and Lisa did not have the same door luck, but eventually made it in also and the four of us bounced around the very well dressed, impossibly skinny, and ambiously gay group of 20 and 30 somethings. The mix included Kate Lanphear (!) who brushed up against Katie as I renewed my friendship with Eddie!
Last year Eddie invited me (and I invited Katie) to a party at the Tribecca Grand with the Misshapes, so it had come full circle. Also present was the ever fabulous Krystal Simpson, wearing the worlds most coveted gold boots. Barbara just about peed herself.
While the party was fabu- we wanted dancing. We also wanted to say good bye to a certain part of our lives. While we were once in love with Ruff Club, it had become decidedly young, too crowded and not for us anymore, but seeing that Friday was its last night ever, attending that shitshow was of the upmost importance.
We skipped the line (ugh, lines (yes I realize this makes me sound holier than thou)) and I gave my favorite bouncer, Ro, a huge hug. I had meant to bring him flowers for being such a great guy over all this time, but strangely enough its hard to find flowers after midnight...
Ruff Club was fun for a few minutes, Katie and I had our final photos taken by Felipe (love) and danced around to an amazing block of music that included Fat Boy Slim. Can't ever go wrong with that kind of jam. AND Kate Lanphear followed us over there, with her amazing chunky silver necklace and world's coolest hair cut.
But overall it was still full of young children, which was appropriate. We said, let them have thier fun! Dance your hearts away kiddies! We remember when, we loved it so as you do now, and now we're off to the mid-twenties jam spots. Hey Cabin, hows it going?

Little Joy

Although I didn't bring my camera to the concert last night, I still feel like I must describe the wonders of last night's concert.
Babs emailed me a few months ago- "Hey lets go to this concert at the Bowery, its really cute pop music and you'll really like it! The band is Little Joy."
So I was like totes there. Plus Babsamaroo has a baller taste in concerts and jamz in general, now that she's well over her Ben Folds phase.
Well that concert finally happened last night and Little Joy was actually a big joy...I'm so punny.
The jams were sweet, fun, and sometimes in Portuguese, which is the best. I have a big crush on Brasil, and Brasilian boys (haaayyy) in general. Plus when you cover Os Mutantes then I just have to give you props. So *snaps* for Little Joy. Plus I just wanted to hang out with Matt Romano who seemed to be having a total blast behind the drums (filling in for Fabrizio of the Strokes). Once I said hi to him at Cabin, and he was nice enough, but I don't think I realized who I was talking to- but then last night I did that thing-
"Hey, I know that guy from somewher- oohhhhhh yeah."
Anyways I love watching musicians that look like they love doing what they are doing, and while there were some people on stage who looked like they were sick of playing the same songs, Matt and Rodrigo were having a great time kickin' out the jamz.

And also the lead singer, Rodrigo, looks like the exact twin of this dude I dated but that dude was awful, and Rodrigo was wonderful. And more fit. And Brasilian. Haaayyyy.

For thier final song they brought out two dudes I don't know, and Fabrizio Moretti (its his band after all) and Regnia Spector, and everyone sang and felt good about life, plus there was live brass. And I danced. Really a perfect concert.

Rivington Hotel Penthouse

On the 20th floor in the LES is the Rivington Hotel's Penthouse. I went to party there for Surface Magazine. The view was stunning. The penthouse was AMAZING. Luxury, my friends. On the third floor of the penthouse was a hot tub, a HUGE barrel hot tub. It was the roof, so one could totally have one of those moments with snow falling all around, a flute of champagne in one's hand and naked time in the hot tub.
I am jealous of people who stay in the penthouse.

Erin Wasson and RVCA party!

Katie and I went to check out Erin Wasson's party last Thursday. It was hosted on this amazing rooftop with lovely lantern lights and a free Belvedere vodka bar, which got us both toasty. Before we started down that path, with clear minds we talked to one of our absolute favorites, Scott Schulman, the Sartorialist! It was amazing, to have this long conversation with an artist whose work you admire. And BONUS! He wants to shoot Katie, 'cause she's all sorts of wonderful and lovely and hip-y. I can see why.

Erin's line was cool, nothing too stunning, but perfectly sell-able stuff, and a really cute floral print dress was part of the line. I loved that dress. There were photos of her along the wall modeling her line, and models standing around wearing her line. I forgot to take pictures of all that, I did however remember to take a photo of this guy.

And there is Erin, talking to the DJ. She's really cute in person, and danced at her own party. Anyone who dances is alright with me, dancing my raison d'etre.

Tuesday Night is a Happy Ending

Tuesday's at Happy Endings is almost always super fun. The dj's play the beats, the kids dance, the fashion is outrageous, the booze is free for an hour, and I'll sometimes run into someone I know... like Tradon. He was on something, but Tradon knows how to kick out the jamz. As per usual my partner in crime, Katie, came out and dance-a-lanced with me.

I tried to take pictures of the cool lights and the balloons, but my point-and-shoot just doesn't have those capabilities. Makes me think I should get a new camera (is that a running theme today?)
Tonight... hanging out at Union Square? The Plumm? The Annex?

the Annex gets sweeded

Katie, my love, my new bestest best friend and I went to the Annex on Wed. She needed a break from the office life, and I just love dancing. We got to dance (thank you Dimitry) and met some sweedes. They were all well dressed and amazing. And also, Katie has a crush on the bartender.

That time we stalked Daniel Vosovic

We were at Happy Endings, and Katie exclaims "Hey! Isn't that Daniel Vosovic?!" And I said "I don't know, let's find out. Quick! He's going outside!"
In the maylay Katie broke-de-broke her very expensive sandals. AND we didn't even get a really good stalker photo (which I took by pretending to "take" a picture of Katie with him in the background.)

There were also alot of balloons at Happy Endings, I don't know why, but I lurved it. Black balloons, black like my soul...

Max Fish's

I kinda broke my vow of avoiding LES and Manhattan in general on the weekends, and somehow ended up right there on a Saturday night. I went to the only place that is kind of okay at that time, Max Fish. I noticed something in their incredible, if not overwhelming decor which I have never noticed before, the many clocks of notable faces. I think we've got everyone from Bill Clinton to ODB.

oh, you know... The Annex, again

Kick it, Katie! I guess there is nothing new to report. I took my new bestest friend who likes dancin' at the clurbs out to The Annex. She lurved it.
Dimitry!!! killing it on the one and twos...or umm... the computer.

The Annex

Wednesday night at the Annex is usually da bombdotcom if ya know what I mean. Showing up at 1ish (yes, its a little late for a work night) means the dance floor is full, the music is pumping (thank you Dimitry!!!) and I'll definatly see someone I know. Like last wed, I ran into Tradon, the best Crazy there is.

I thought Tradon looks like he is channeling ODB in this picture. Barbara didn't know who ODB was.

Wandering around the LES

As per usual I was in the LES for no reason other than to pursue free booze at an open bar or two. Megan, a fabulous lady who is leaving (!) to go to New Zealand, is spending her last NYC week living it up with her friend Ena, also leaving, and also fab.

We went to Happy Endings on Broome st. The outside might just be my favorite part of the whole place. Rumor has it was once a Asian massage parlor/brothel. The street front has the same awning as when it was a massage parlor, Chinese(?) characters and all. It just looks like a closed Asian shop, the only give away is a bouncer standing out front. This appeals to the part of me that adores speakeasies. So the downstairs still has their old steam rooms and a faucet on the wall from when it was a "bathhouse." The steam rooms just become kinda semi-private party rooms, or vantage point to watch people dancing on their smallish dance floor. There is a bathroom behind the steam rooms that not that many people know about, so its much less of a wait. The scene is a mix mosh of hip kids and pickup wall street types. I've never had a bad time at Happy Endings, but only once did I have a great time.
We also went to Darkroom on Ludlow. I had never been there before, the long lines on the weekend always discouraged me, especially when Max Fish is across the street, and one of the only places I like to go to despite its lack of dancing. The bouncers at Darkroom were pretty friendly, one was a little too friendly if you catch my drift... but it was still an okay time. The ceilings are pretty low, and true to its name its very dark.

I could see it getting a little claustrophobic when it reaches capacity. I bet its a fun place when it's full of people dancing, but it was just a lounge-y atmosphere with only a few people dancing. Again, I could take it or leave it. We did find some lovely and nutty gents to dance with who were particularly crazy on the dance floor, in a good way of course. Apparently their open bar ended while we were there and according to Megan and Ena, the drinks ain't cheap. I think I would be open to revisiting Darkroom again, different night, different scene.
