Holidays in the 'burbs.

I went up to the 'burbs for a day of Christmas feasting, good friend time spending, and mostly some dog pettin' time. Well that's what everyone who came over for Christmas did. Here is my dad, prepping Merlin for the big day ahead of him.
What's interesting about our Christmas celebration is that over the years it has turned into a big Jew-a-thon, considering the only people who are not really jewish are my mom and her brothers and my aunt. We did the whole menorah thing because this was one of those years where the holidays intercepted.

Museum of Arts and Design

For our lovely office party we had lunch at the Landmarc and then moseyed on down to the Museum of Arts and Design at Columbus Circle. The Museum is rad- a great way to spend the day. I kept getting scolded for taking photos, so my collection is incomplete.
You can tell that they are transitioning from a crafts related museum to a more arts focused curation. I wasn't able to take photos of all the rad pieces that were more fine-artsy, but they were great, well put together, well edited, and well appreciated by yours truly.

Perforated vase collection.

Glowing orange city bowl!

A ring for each finger. If you look closely there is an animal figure on the top of each ring.
A necklace made directly from a porcelain bowl.

Santa Con

We tried to take a photo with some Santacon-ers. They were fratty fratty frat boys and sucked.
And the mom taking the photo also really sucked- at taking photos.
And we were near Rockefeller Center which is a terribile place to be, extra horrible during Christmas time when its full of ass holes from Not New York.

Olsen-o-rama

The ultimate celebrity sighting last night- an Olsen at Lit Lounge.
I'm not sure how I can elaborate on this, except that it was a really good moment. Everyone in the bar was way too New York to holler at her or anything, it was just like any other girl at the bar.

When I was an RA in college my floor was Olsen Twin themed.

And club be Jumping Jumping

Allz I want to know is what did these poor men say when their costumes were presented to them, and they realized they were going to be Siegfried and Roy.
Nice capes.

this guy

It's all in your head, jar head.
I mean, how does someone discover this is what they are good at?

We're going to the circus, we're going to the fair

The other night I surprized my family and brought them to the Big Apple Circus. We've been going as a family since I was around three years old, and 'cause I'm the ballerest daughter and sister, I bought our tickets this year.
What the fam fam didn't know was that they were ringside. IT WAS SO FREAKIN' COOL! All the acts look better with nothing obstructing my view. AND THE HORSES ARE HUGEnourmous.

Well except for the little horse.

All the acts were amazing- the dog act is always my favorite, this years was good but a little too short. As far as I'm concerned the whole circus could just be an hour long dog act...

They had these two (very attractive) boys juggling, they never dropped a pin and they were super coordinated, one of the best juggling acts I've ever seen.
This woman did amazing things on a tightrope. She could lift her whole body up on one hand while balancing on the wire. It was le shit.
And then there was this guy, who threw large and heavy vases in the air and caught them on his head. BIZZARE.

Grandma!

Gilbert and Geroge

Last Saturday was the Brooklyn Museum's once monthly First Saturday party thing where the museum stays open way past its bed time. On display currently is the fantastic Gilbert and George!

Quirky doesn't even begin to describe how wonder filled this space is.
The artistic duo, who met in the late 60's, really get it. They understand the artist's work only starts with the piece.
They have a full comprehension of how important scale, framing and environment factor into the overall outcome of their work. Somehow they have a thread of consistency without being forced into a very strict Gilbert and George box.
There is a level of accessibility that allows the viewer to engage with the work at a superficial level and then to delve into its deeper levels. Pretentious its not.
FUN-QUIRKY-COLORFUL-LOUD- are some adjectives I would use. LARGE is another one.

Bathroom art

By the bathrooms at the art house movie theatre on Broadway and 64 (?) have this fancy artz. Kinda a strange place to hang art, but I'm glad its there. Why not enhance all spaces?

Jekyll and Hyde

This kinda fun, mostly touristy restaurant called Jekyll and Hyde has a car, with a "coffin" on top... and a santa. I saw it the other day. It was wacky, and fun!
I went to the West Village Jekyll and Hyde on a date in 7th grade- it was my boyfriend from sleep away camp and both our families had to come. In retrospect I can probably see it as being super duper awkward for both sets of parents, having never met each other before.

Technique

In a room filled with useless photography, I spied this wonderful pirate ship cutout. Why is it a pirate ship? Because me says it is, arg!

oh Kermey!

We went to the balloon blowing up before the parade. For some reason they pinned Kermit the Frog in such a position he looked like he was touching on himself. oh yeah.

WTF is with Ann Taylor Mannequins?

Their tots, or more specifically, their nips. Jeeze, it can't be that cold in the windows. You could cut glass with nips that hard.

Our new favorite place

We stumbled up a little gem so far west, you're practically in the Hudson, called Tortilla Flats. Its SUPER kitschy, they have tons of Elvis memorabilia, and also have hula hoops and disco music (complete with a disco ball).
If you guess the right number when a guy comes and throws dice on your table you will get free tequila shots. Best most fun.
Don't cry, Elvis.
