Hairz

My brother is a blond. Ever since I was about three, when my hair went from soft light blonde to dark brown, I've been jealous of his blond locks. That is until I was a junior in high school and took matters into my own hands. Screw you bland, boring, banal brown- I'm going blond! And ever since then I have not seen my natural color (don't look at my roots!). In college I went slightly more red, always resourceful-doing it myself with the at-home bottle, until this year where magic happened and I got a fantastic hook up at the John Barrett salon. Yeah, you know, that one on the top of Bergdorf's? Dhalinks, its fabulous.
I cannot usually afford that bizznas, but the fates smiled upon my head.
And I love being a red head, I loved being a blond. I've never felt nostalgic for my dreary old locks.
Except I have fallen in love with soft soft light pink. And I can't get it out my head. That is until I get it on my head.
My inspiration you might wondering to yourself!?
I recently re-watched Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, and there is a scene when Kirsten Dunst is running around with pink hair, and I remembered how much I loved that hair the first time I saw it.
And then I found this photo today- omg that is me, except not yet. Its future me. Aren't I just beeyoutiful? Isn't my hair just fantastic? Future me is going to own those sunglasses and shoes also. Obvi.

I don't think my hair guy will let me do it, but I really want it, even if it ends us destroying my hair. Then I can get one of those cute boy cuts that I've been flirting with. Lets face it I'm too emotionally attached to my hair to chop it off yet. But pink...mmmmm.

Jazz Age!

Last Sunday Jordan and I hopped on the Governor's Island Ferry and went to gasp Gov's Island. The ferry terminal is GORGEOUS. It has an old fashioned exterior with beautiful arches re-painted olive green and a muted red. It really stands out especially next to the -barf- "contemporary" Staten Island terminal, a blah combo of glass, metal and concrete.
We were on our way to the Jazz Age Lawn Party. It was fabulous. Me and Jordan, totally under dressed, because people just dressed to the nines. Everyone was in costume, and dancing. The music was perfect, even if I didn't know how to dance to all of it. Sometimes me and Jordan made up our own dances and that was great too.

And while we weren't dancing, there was plenty of people watching to be had.

Oh and dhalinks, I found this terribly equisite velvet coat. That I need. Right now.
Can you say winter time project? Because that's what I'm thinking.

And Jordy found a car.

Albert Einstien came to the party.
(note- later her talked to Tara about how he met Martin Scorse twice, and that her dress was vintage, even though Tara insisted it wasn't. It was also bright yellow and made of a poly-mesh, so I was inclined to agree with Tara, but Albert did come up with the theory of realitivity)

The weather was pheonmenial, the drinks were -aparently- amazing, and there was fudge that made me cry it was so tasty. All in all, the perfect way to spend my day.

Costume...?

So I freaked out for a hot minute... Halloween is really really close and I still hadn't a clue as to what I was going to be.
I mean, this is an important holiday, hey? HELLO! DRESSING UP!
But I've figured it out. That's right, kiddies. I'm going to be a Cholo. A lady version. So that's actually a Chola. With lip liner and no lipstick and big ass fake nailz. So going to be the ballerest. What are all y'all going to be for this ever important holiday?

Drink N Draw

5 min pose

Last night I took my very first life drawing class since I was a freshman in college. Needless to say its been a hot minute. I haven't really been drawing alot lately, except for fashion figures. Those are kinda cookie cutter at the mo'.
I was nervous about my skillz, but I still got 'em. I made these on some crappy Mead sketch book I snatched up at the Kmart at Astor Place, and a bic pen.
I've never drawn naked ladies to "Bust A Move," Metalica, or Justice, but at 3rd Ward's Drink N Draw, you can totes get your art on to some real jamz. No real instruction, and it was a bit crowded, (READ: not amazing for a beginer) but I'm totes going back. The low pressure environment was baller.
5 min pose

Ten min poses
Twenty min pose (and my fav from the class)

Yinka Shonibare M.B.E.

I FINALLY made it over to the Brooklyn Museum to check out one of my favorite artists of all time- Yinka Shonibare M.B.E. First of all let me say he is baller. Secondly let me say his sense of humor is my favorite. Thirdly let me say my piece:
He plays with race in a way that is really interesting, and really intend the full use of the word play. Most of the time when an artist makes work about race, it centers around their personal story of being black, Asian, Indian, whatever- which I find really boring. I find art about one's personal experience (self portraits for example) at best trying because usually the artist has not given us, the viewers, enough information to access the work. We remain on the outside, and the artist sits atop his/her throne of superiority. Furthermore the work is often focused on an already exhausted idea. LOOK! Poor, starving Indian prostitutes and their kids in photographs! LOOK! Hip hop superstars living in their excessive excess! LOOK! The environment is crumbling and this bird won't make it through the next decade!

I'M BORED! Not to say I'm nihilistic, because I think all these things are incredibly important (not that I ever talk about it on the blog, but I'm a huge environmentalist) and I care about them like woah. Its just- lets talk about these things, lets have an open dialogue, lets make change, make it happen. Or perhaps art is a way to positively affect our global issues also, I just don't appreciate it as art. Kapesche? Yet, I digress...
So Yinka, darling, he makes this really interesting art, that is kinda almost about race, but also not at all. He's interested in the work on so many levels besides just the race card. Its a wholeistic view.
Let's take some Dutch wax fabric, lets take these Victorian era costumes, lets take the heads off these mannequins, I'm gonna be in these photos as a tribute to Oscar Wilde's Dorian Gray, I'm going to make these characters perform sexually deviant acts, and I'm going to hide some kids inside of other rooms in the museum.

You're going to be completely absorbed by this video where real people (with heads) are dancing around in these amazing Dutch wax outfits. I'm going to have fun, you're going to have fun. We're going to have fun all together. "These famous intellectuals in my pieces are going to have fun." He knows what he's referencing but that doesn't' mean I have to know what he's referencing to have a great time with his work, not just great as in "I like to have fun" but as in hey, that stimulated my brainz; or hey, I feel inspired to make something when I get home; or hey, DANCE PARTY! Needless to say, it was a breath of fresh air. Olafur, I still love you, but Yinka is joining your ranks. Watch yer back!

Let's go back a few weeks.

Well I finally stopped being a lazy ass and plugged in my camera.

Remember when I said I went to the DVF show, and ya'll were like I don't even believe you.
Well here it is, except my camera was (still is) on the fritz, and I was way in the back with the nobodies, so the photos are few and far in between, and I'm not thrilled with the color/lighting/focus etc.
P.S. check out Terrence's fabu vintage shirt.
